Students will learn about opportunities to intern or conduct social science research through the Lehigh partnership with Pathways Development Initiative (PDI). PDI is a local, grass-roots organization working to reduce poverty and promote empowerment in the Bududa region of Uganda. Students can intern at for PDI in fields related to: education, village savings and loans, small business entrepreneurship, and youth sports. Research opportunities focus on topics related to public health, development, education, gender, and the environment/sustainability. Student research will be supervised by Professor Kelly Austin or Mark Noble.

The 2022 summer Uganda experience will be ~3 weeks in length, with tentative dates of July 10-31. Lehigh students and faculty get a culturally-immersive experience staying together at the Zaale homestay. Additional activities include hiking waterfalls, coffee tours, and a visit to a wildlife sanctuary.

This is a non-credit bearing program. Students secure funding by working directly with Professor Austin. Out of pocket costs are typically minimal. To apply: students must submit a 1-page proposal by January 14th explaining why they are interested in the program, and what particular activity they would like to do while in Bududa (e.g. research project or intern at PDI, and what the focus will be). Only current juniors, sophomores, and first-years are eligible.

Questions? Or, to submit your 1-page proposal, please email Professor Kelly Austin at: kellyaustin@lehigh.edu
