“The Polygamy Pipeline: Why plural marriage endures in an African metropolis”
Professor Bruce Whitehouse
Sociology and Anthropology Department

The Global Studies Research Colloquium series explores ongoing research by faculty. In these sessions we will discuss pre-circulated drafts of manuscripts in preparation for publication. These sessions will begin with very quick remarks by the author, a brief comment and introduction by a GS faculty member, followed by open discussion of the pre-circulated materials.

Please join the Global Studies faculty to give feedback to Bruce on a working chapter of his current book project: The Polygamy Pipeline.

A case study based on ethnographic fieldwork, The Polygamy Pipeline investigates how and why polygamy persists in the city of Bamako, Mali. The book uses plural marriage as a lens through which to examine the sweeping transformation of life in African cities, of which Bamako is among the fastest-growing. Chapter 1, "Marriage and the Life Course," sets the stage with an overview of changes currently underway to Bamako's marriage
system.
